Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery

Why eyelids change over time

During our lives, the appearance of our eyelids goes through various stages of transformation. This is due to three main factors: skin elasticity, periorbital structures slackening and the amount of fat tissue in this area of the body.

In addition, external factors can also affect eyelid aging, such as exposure to the sun, accumulated fatigue, genetic predispositions, smoking, etc. This is when, for example, fine lines or wrinkles, dark circles in the eye orbit, bags or sagging eyelids will appear.

The purpose of blepharoplasty is to alleviate these manifestations, which can very well be corrected at Dr. Mario F. Bernier’s clinic of surgery and aesthetic medicine.

How blepharoplasty can help you

That you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your eyelids because they falsely give the impression that you are a severe, tired or depressed person is not a situation without a solution. Indeed, the correction of the upper or lower eyelids is an operation which is practised every day and can be carried out using various medical techniques.

In fact, blepharoplasty is an art. What may seem like a simple incision is really a series of medical and aesthetic choices made by the doctor to ensure an optimal result. Always done under anesthesia, local and sedation, the surgical procedure can take from one to three hours.

The recovery period will depend on the preferred technique, but in most cases it can take about a week to ten days. In concrete terms, here is what it means.

For the upper eyelid, Dr Mario F. Bernier removes part of the skin by making an incision following the natural crease of the eyelid. The stitches, removed a week later, give way to a younger-looking eyelid, and this, with an already very inconspicuous scar.

In some cases, the lower eyelid may be treated without an external scar; instead, the incision will be made inside the eye (transconjunctival). The surgeon can then remove or reposition the fat tissue. For more severe cases, an incision is made under the lashes to remove excess skin.

Other procedures do not necessarily require an incision. Indeed, laser techniques have proven themselves over several decades and have improved over time. Thus, with the SmartSkin CO2 laser, it is possible to correct the most stubborn wrinkles, to treat the skin so that it becomes smoother, firmer.
